Lesson Planning for Evidence-Based Teaching: Bridging Learning Theory and Instructional Design

Effective lesson planning is a core professional practice in teaching, yet many educators struggle to move beyond procedural completion of templates toward evidence-based alignment of learning outcomes, activities, and assessments. This paper synthesises insights from the philosophy of education, instructional design theory, cognitive psychology, and formative assessment research to propose a principled framework for lesson planning. Drawing on the concept of teaching as purposeful interaction and the distinction between visible instructional structures and deep learning processes, the paper argues that alignment must operate at multiple levels: outcome-ability congruence using contemporary cognitive taxonomies, outcome-activity correspondence grounded in cognitive load theory and multimodal learning principles, and outcome-assessment consistency through embedded formative practices. The paper refines earlier oversimplifications regarding sensory modality use, drawing on multisensory learning research to advocate strategic alternation rather than rigid exclusion of modalities. Implications for teacher education include the need to develop deep pedagogical reasoning rather than procedural compliance, while future research should investigate how novice teachers acquire alignment competence across different subject areas and digital learning environments. The paper concludes that when lesson planning is treated as a testable hypothesis rather than a fixed script, it becomes a powerful vehicle for cumulative professional growth.
